Most people find it impossible to remember which anniversary gift is traditional for each year of marriage and more often than not need to refer to books or the internet to find out.

Finding an anniversary gift that is suitable really depends on who the anniversary gift is for. You may not consider the same ideas for your parents or friends as you would for your partner, some in fact could turn out totally unsuitable.

The first place to start is finding out what a traditional gift would be for example.

First anniversary gift – paper.
Second anniversary gift – cotton.
Third anniversary gift –   leather
Fourth anniversary gift – fruit and flowers
Fifth anniversary gift – Wood
Sixth anniversary gift – Iron
Seventh anniversary gift – wool or copper
Eighth anniversary gift - Bronze
Ninth anniversary gift – pottery
Tenth anniversary gift – Tin

Generally as the years become more the gift its self usually has more value. A wedding anniversary gift for the first year would be something made of paper and although this may seem like a gift made from such a material is not special there is much you can do with paper.

The most common paper gift is to find a newspaper or something similar relating to year the couple were married. You may even consider having a poem written as this would be printed on paper so not only will it keep with tradition it will also be personal to the couple in question.

It is worth considering what someone may use or need as a wedding anniversary gift, for example, if it is for a couple that have only been married a year or two they may benefit more from a practical gift such as a house hold item or weekend away.

If the anniversary if for fifty years then the couple most probably have every thing they need and would appreciate a more personal and thoughtful gift.

If the wedding anniversary gift is for your partner then you need to find something appropriate that not only expresses your love but shows sentiment and the fact that you have put some time and effort into finding a suitable gift.

These types of gifts do not have to be expensive because the fact that you are celebrating your wedding anniversary counts more than the gift itself.

Be imaginative and romantic, slipping a wedding poem into your partners bag to be discovered when they reach work is a romantic gesture and will make them smile all day.
Or if you are feeling really brave you could even recite wedding verses over a candle lit dinner for two.
What ever gift you choose remember most people appreciate the time and sentiment spent choosing the gift than the gift its self.
